Dallas Mavericks hammer Houston Rockets

The Mavericks outmatched the Rockets with stifling defense en route to Friday's 95-74 triumph. Josh Howard recorded 22 points for Dallas, which has now won a franchise best 17th straight at home. Jason Terry added 18 points.

PS: Oh and this Wiki thing is catching on like wild-fire... our own Mavericks also have a wiki now:

The Official MavsWiki is a collaboration of Mavs history, official stats and the all important FAN perspective. Editing of this site is open to all and we encourage everyone to share thoughts, comments and photos of their experiences with Mavs.

Why I love Fridays...

Friday is my favorite day of the week... specially when I get back home from work.... I can finally relax, think about and give some serious time to other things are important to me - like sleeping hard and being totally lazy in the most efficient manner... and, of course, abuse, yell and scream at myself for not paying that bill on time... and for not being able to make it to the gym more regularly....

Life is going so fast... work is hectic... too many things going on at this time... I am building a new house so I have to visit that once every week (that reminds me I have to post some pictures - I have a freaking busy sleeping schedule, so if I get some time I will do the needful)... and then there is other stuff(!!!).... but I made a resolution that this year I will be a better blogger... and I think I am doing reasonably ok!!!

(PS: My ultimate favorite evening of the week happens to be WEDNESDAY! :-) That is when I see mi vida)

Congratulations, Indianapolis Colts -- SuperBowl XLI Champions!

The Indianapolis Colts won the Super Bowl for the first time since the franchise’s relocation to the Circle City in 1984 with a 29-14 win over the Chicago Bears in super-soggy Miami.

I am so happy for Payton & specially for coach Dungy - not because he is the first ever african-american coach to win, but for his personality, for the way he coaches. He calls it the "Gods way" - with faith in God and each other. WoW! I respect him so much. The team does too and I think that is reflected in his teams performance year over year and now the well-deserved championship. Payton manning is a future hall-of-famer. He is the best in the business. Well done Payton.

So, after the congratulations, let us go over the game:

Chicago’s Devin Hester put the Colts in a hole early, returning the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown. The first quarter was most exciting and was full of turn-overs and drama.

The Colts answered at the 6:58 mark of the first quarter when Reggie Wayne broke loose in the Bears’ secondary for a 53-yard TD reception. Indianapolis settled for six points, however, when the extra point snap was bobbled.

Set up by a 52-yard run by Thomas Jones, Chicago went up 14-6 when Rex Grossman hit Mushin Muhammad in the end zone from four yards out.

The Colts pulled to within five at 14-9 with 11:17 left in the second quarter on a 29-yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri, and took a 16-14 lead on Dominic Rhodes’ 1-yard TD run with 3:08 remaining in the first half.

After turnovers on consecutive plays by both teams gave the Colts the ball back in Bear territory, Vinatieri missed from 36 yards out on the final play of the half.

Vinatieri came through on the first possession of the second half, hitting a 24-yard field goal to cap a 13-play, 56-yard drive that ate 7:34 off the clock and put the Colts up 19-14. He then made it an eight-point lead with a 20-yarder with 3:20 left in the quarter.

Robbie Gould ended the Bears’ scoring drought with a 44-yard field goal with 1:18 left in the quarter.

With 11:44 remaining, Kelvin Hayden intercepted Grossman and returned it 56 yards for a score — one that held up after the play was reviewed — to put the Colts up 28-17.

The Colts’ defense intercepted Grossman and forced a turnover on downs on Chicago’s next two possessions, and kept the Bears nowhere near the end zone to end the game.

The Colts had the ball just over twice as long as the Bears, and dominated most every statistical category. Peyton Manning was named MVP after hitting on 25-of-38 throws for 247 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

With the win a lot of milestones were reached for the Colts:

  1. It’s the second time in 35 years that they won the Superbowl.
  2. It’s the first time they’ve won it as the “Indianapolis” Colts.
  3. The Colts became the first “dome” team to win in an outdoor stadium.
  4. Tony Dungy became the first african-american coach to win the Superbowl.
  5. Dungy (Player - Steelers, Coach - Colts) became the only 3rd person in NFL history after Tom Flores (Player - Chiefs, Coach - Raiders) and Mike Ditka (Player - Dolphins, Coach - Bears) to have won the Superbowl both as a player and head coach.

80M IPTV subs by 2011 (Strategy Analytics)

According to a report from Strategy Analytics, over the next five years IPTV subscribers will grow to a staggering 80 million worldwide from just under 6 million IPTV households today. Additionally, the number of households worldwide that pay directly for IPTV service will rise from 3.3 million in 2006 to 40.9 million in 2011. Currently, about 55 percent of IPTV households pay directly for IPTV services while most of the remaining subscribers receive IPTV service as part of a bundle. In five years, we can look forward to a decline in the percentage of direct-paying IPTV households, as the industry increasingly favors service bundles.

ConvinceMe - arguing oline

For all the compulsive argue-ers, now there is a website where they can go all out and argue all they want... without getting bitch-slapped or knocked-down. Honestly I can't believe that someone would think there is a business model around something like this. If it becomes popular, then yeah maybe some ads revenue. But would that be enough to sustain the company? I don't know if there is a huge demand for something like this, but it sure looks interesting...

ConvinceMe is a new competitive arguing site launching tonight. It will let debaters carry out public debates, head to head arguments, and a “King of the Hill” free for all about any subject they like. Other argument sites, like Hot Soup and LoveToLead, have focused on sobering issues, like political or philosophical debates and polls. Comment threads and forums have also been great places for people to argue. Just look at the comments for Do the Right Thing.

ConvinceMe lets members talk about anything and ranks them based on how many “convince” points they get from user voting for their argument. Private debates are issued as public challenges from one member to another and end when one site has gained the agreed number of votes for their side. For public debates, each side’s arguments are ordered by the number of votes the arguments have. “King of the Hill” is a twist on the challenge debate, with each member only able to submit one argument for their position. The first argument with 100 votes wins. The final type, public debates are ongoing, with the votes for one side or the other marking the overall opinion of the community on the subject.

ConvinceMe just launched and hopefully they will convince me...

Predictions for Superbowl 2006

Bears vs Saints : NFC Championship Game

Saints win this one... They deserve to. They have the best offense, coached by last year's Cowboys offensive coordinator - this year's coach of the year - Sean Payton - and are by far the most creative and exciting team to watch - and they play with so much emotion! (very much required to win playoff games)

Colts vs Patriots : AFC Championship Game

Colts better win this... they became my favorite team after Cowboys lost. I think this is going to be a thriller. This can turn out to be a more exciting game than the Superbowl 2006. Payton Manning deserves to play in the Superbowl (and win it).

Superbowl 2006: Colts vs. Saints

COLTS WIN IT ALL!!!

Go Colts...

Why damaka is good for Enterprises?

A friend asked me this question last night... Some of the key points of my response are listed below:

damaka is great for enterprises that are looking for a secure, standards-based communication and collaboration application, to provide productivity features but keeping the costs down.

Benefits of damaka

  • End-to-End Secure:

One of the biggest concerns, Enterprises have is Security. Skype, with its supernodes can be an IT admin’s worst nightmare. But damaka’s solution is “end-to-end secure” (signaling and media) and allows administrators to have “complete control” over the network.

  • Standards-Based (Peer-to-Peer, SIP - Session Initiation Protocol):

With damaka’s SIP-based, P2P enterprise solution, businesses of all sizes can combine voice, video, data, real-time presence, instant messaging (with cross over to other protocols), and various applications for richer, more integrated communications on one converged IP network.

Enterprises can streamline system administration, desktop and endpoint management by integrating their IP PBX for conferencing, unified messaging, and other media on the same SIP network, and eliminate multiple admin interfaces as well as the need for separate IT voice teams and data teams.

  • Save Money - damaka-to-damaka audio & video calls are completely free. Enterprises can also enjoy free audio & video conferencing. damaka PC-to-Phone feature DialOut allows businesses to save a lot of money on phone calls. They can save a lot of money with reduced cost of operation as damaka is peer-to-peer. Enterprises can go with either fully managed, damaka-hosted or in-house-network solution.

  • - Increase Productivity – Real-time Presence, Instant messaging (with IMConnectivity you can connect to MSN, Yahoo, AOL, GTalk and ICQ from within damaka) , Group chats, conference calls, video conferencing, Desktop sharing help improve productivity.

Apple, Inc's iPhone is here

So it’s official: Apple now is a phone manufacturer. With the announcement of the Apple iPhone, we can now finally assess that new product and I have to say, color me impressed. The company has managed to overcome a lot of the problems surrounding existing mobile phones and created a device that is close to what geeks like myself want: 2 megapixel camera, MP3 player, video player, phone with integrated address book, calendar, email, web browser, SMS, notepad, google maps, and support for other widgets, which makes the whole platform more extensible.

It’s a very smart move on the part of Apple, which highlighted the change in the way the company is operating by changing its name from Apple Computer, Inc. to Apple, Inc. , reflecting the fact that they are no longer just a computer company. There were a few interesting items of interest, though.

For starters, no mention of how the phone will sync up with a computer. Are we to assume that it’s Mac Only or will it synchronize with computers running Windows too? If so, does that mean that a new set of applications will be available to Windows users to sync their address book, calendar and email with systems like Outlook or will the device require to manage those things specifically using Apple applications on Windows?

The other thing that was interesting is the announcement that the phone will run on quad-band GSM and will be using EDGE network. This means that the phone will get decent but not great data service. Perfect for email and light web browsing but not quite fast enough for video streaming. However, the introduction of WiFi in the device, which many other companies have avoided for fear of losing battery capacity, could take care of that.

The other interesting thing is that the operating system on this device is OSX. This seems to point out to two possible issues: First, what does that mean for PortalPlayer, which has traditionally provided Apple with the operating system (embedded on a chip) for the iPod? The second question is what does it mean in general: What Apple has introduced is basically a mac in a small form factor, which could easily compete with the UMPC specifications introduced by Microsoft. It’s pretty clear that Apple has a lot of plans in the future for that device but they didn’t say much about the significance of OSX, providing it almost as an aside (and what does it mean for the next version of OSX, which was not mentioned during this keynote at all, a surprising omission in itself.)

Palm (makers of the Treo), RIM (makers of the Blackberry), and Motorola and Nokia will obviously not be thrilled with the entrance of Apple in this market. Below is a comparison on how they fare against iPhone:

Gators thrash Buckeyes (41 - 14)

Urban Meyer's Gators have totally thrashed Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith's Buckeyes 41 to 14 in tonight's BCS national championship game. I was expecting a very competitive game - just like last year's last second Texas Longhorns win over Trojans, but it turned out to be a one-sided affair... Gators dominated the game from the start. I don't think Troy Smith even got 100 passing yards for something that averaged over 400 yards per game. Congratulations Gators. Better luck next time Buckeyes!

Picture with Kenyan ambassador to US

On Dec 20, 2006, I had the honor to meet the Kenyan ambassador to the US, Mr. Peter N.R.O. Ogego, who was visiting Dallas and was met by Pro Tem Don Hill, the mayor of Dallas. The two discussed opening bilateral trade and investment from Texas to Kenya.

His Excellency, Mr. Ogego, gave an impressive keynote address at a Luncheon organized by the African Chamber of Commerce, urging the business community in Dallas to invest in various sectors of the Kenya economy and take advantage of the opportunities presented by the expansion of the East Africa Community.

The event was attended by among others, Mr Ross Perot Jr. a multi billionaire investor in Dallas.

His Excellency, Mr. Ogego was presented with a special key for the city of Dallas by Mayor Don Hill.

I also had an opportunity to meet and trade business cards with Mr. Ross Perot Jr, Texas Secretary of State Mr. Roger Williams and President and CEO of African Chamber of Commerce, Sanmi Akinmulero. I must thank my good friend Steve Mathuku for the the invite.

Release from a strategically interesting Web2.0 technology company: damaka Launches IM Connectivity to MSN, Yahoo, AOL and Google

damaka Launches IM Connectivity to MSN, Yahoo, AOL and Google

damaka users only need one software to connect to different instant messaging platforms, call friends all over the world, watch Internet TV, conference with webcam, and share desktops

RICHARDSON, Texas – January 5, 2006 – damaka™, a fast-growing communication and collaboration software company, launches IM connectivity to MSN, Yahoo, AOL and Google. This feature allows damaka users to chat with friends across different platforms without having to launch multiple IM clients. Seamless instant messaging is a new element of the industry’s smallest downloadable peer-to-peer damaka software, which includes Internet TV, desktop sharing, and video conferencing.

According to MIT student Laila Shabir, “I have been using damaka VoIP application to make free calls to my family in Dubai. The new damaka IM is easy to use as I can move from MSN to AOL by clicking on a button. I am so glad that I don’t have to launch other IM clients to talk to my friends around the world. Also, it helps in removing the different communication tools clutter on my desktop and I am glad there’s finally a company that can do everything in one application.”

“With the addition of multi-platform IM to its white-label product suite, damaka now allows carriers, service providers, and online communities to cost-effectively deliver unified communication and collaboration services to their user base,” says Satish Gundabathula, CTO of damaka. damaka’s approach to integrating multiple functionality into its SIP-based, peer-to-peer Personal Softswitch™ aligns with the requirements that many companies have for an out-of-the-box triple play solution to increase productivity and generate new revenue streams.

damaka’s P2P communication (IM, Voice, Video, data) is end-to-end encrypted. This feature makes the software a powerful tool for secure and robust corporate communication worldwide.

Ro-mo-Oh-No

The worst 4th quarter for Cowboys: A fumble that leads to eight points. A dropped hold on a field goal. Critical mistakes doomed the Cowboys and Seahawks win 21-20.

It was 1:19 in the 4th quarter... only a "simple" field-goal attempt stood between Cowboys and the first playoffs win for them since 1996 - before the attempt I was thinking this is automatic, Cowboys will win it. But now I know that in NFL, you can't take anything for granted. You have to be efficient in all 3 phases of the game: offense, defense and special teams! Every play counts!

Gramatica was the kicker... Romo was the holder... the snap was good, but somehow the ball slipped from his hands... he failed to set the ball for Gramatica and then tried to out-run the defense for either the first down or the touch-down, but failed.

Romo... Oh noooo!!! :-(

I can' t believe what I saw tonight... the way Dallas Cowboys lost tonight's game is heart-breaking... So much work and great effort by the entire team - specially the way Cowboys defence played - all for nothing... nada... zippppppppppppppp!

I was a big Cricket fan and I got sick of watching India's cricket team snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and stopped watching late last year... I have seen Cowboys do this in the 3 of the last 4 games - tonight's being the worst! I hope they don't make this a habit. Successful teams (and people) always learn from their mistakes and don't repeat them. Great teams (and people) not only learn from their mistakes, but they learn from other's mistakes.

It is unfortunate that Romo was not able to complete the FG play efficiently, but it'll be foolish to blame Romo for this loss. There were other opportunities that the Cowboys did not take advantage of and continued to commit mistakes, specially in the 4th quarter. The team has lots of talent and potential, but they need to work on discipline & fundamentals. They must cut down on the silly mistake & mindless penalties, specially when the game is on the line.

I am very disappointed and sad, but I have not lost the faith in my Cowboys. I know Romo & Parcells will come back strong next season and I really believe they have it in them to win the Superbowl 2008.

But tonight I feel bad & sad for the Cowboys players, coaches & the fans! :-(

NFL Playoffs Predictions (Wild Card Weekend)

NFL Playoffs
Kansas City (9-7) @ Indianapolis (12-4)
Chiefs have one of the best running games in football with LJ in the backfield and also can pass a bit when necessary. Indy on the other hand, has such a poor run defense (ranks last in the NFL with 173.0 yards allowed per game) that they probably wouldn’t be able to stop a stoned Ricky Williams. But the Colts explosive offense can make up for their patchy defense. Indianapolis ranks 2nd in the league with 26.7 points per game and quarterback Peyton Manning ranks 2nd with 4,397 passing yards. Colts win 30-21

Dallas (9-7) @ Seattle (9-7)
As much as I love Tony Romo, his performance as of late has been woefully inconsistant and he definitely needs to be on if Dallas wants to stand a chance at winning. Furthermore, Dallas– as shown in last weeks game against Detroit– can’t stop the big play, and Seattle is full of big-time offensive players. But with Parcells' experience, Romo's creativity and a little bit of luck, Dallas wins this one. Dallas win 27-24

at
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. CT on NBC

The Chiefs (9-7) got the help they needed Sunday and earned a date with Indianapolis Colts (12-4) in the wild-card round of the playoffs. But it won't be easy for the AFC's sixth seed as they head to the RCA Dome, where the Colts completed their first perfect season at home since 1958 when the Baltimore Colts won the NFL championship. Still, the key for the Chiefs will be the matchup of running back Larry Johnson, who set an NFL record for carries this season with 416, against an Indianapolis defense that has surrendered rushing yardage in bunches this year.

at
Saturday, 7 p.m. CT on NBC

Despite owning the top wild card, Dallas (9-7) goes into January having lost consecutive games for the first time all season. The Cowboys also have dropped three of four since owning a two-game division lead in early December. The situation is equally disappointing for the Seahawks (9-7) , who needed a win in the finale to halt a 3-game skid. "Our record isn't what we had hoped, to be honest with you, but there's something about 9-7 being a lot better than 8-8," coach Mike Holmgren said. The teams have met 10 times, with Dallas holding a 6-4 edge, but this will be the first postseason encounter.

Five Principles for Happiness in 2007

David Bach, Author of "The Automatic Millionaire" does a great job of breaking down the secrets to living a rich, happy life:

Most people believe that if they just had more money, the things that make them unhappy would disappear and their lives would be better. The truth is that your life can be better without more money. Each of us has the power to discover our purpose and become joyful in the process of journeying toward that purpose.

Five basic principles involved in creating "Live Rich Factor":

Principle 1: Give Yourself a Break

Stop wasting time in thinking what you shoulda-woulda-coulda done in 2006 or before. It's over, and its time to move on......

Principle 2: Get Connected with Your Truth

The hardest thing to do is be honest with yourself. Asking yourself some key questions will lead you to some amazing discoveries, and possibly motivate you to do what it takes to create the life you envision for yourself......

Principle 3: Stop Judging Yourself

Stop the negative conversations you have with yourself immediately. Say no to negative thoughts and encourage positive thinking.....

Principle 4: Stop Judging Others

We're not here to judge one another.....

Principle 5 : Pursue Fun with a Vengeance

Fun shouldn't be squeezed into a few weeks of vacation each year. And it shouldn't be squeezed into the last chapter of your life when you "get to" retire. Fun deserves to be a part of your life now -- in 2007. But fun doesn't just happen. You have to make it a priority in your life or it'll go missing. Life's too short to not have it.......

Beware of 'Happy New Year' worm

When users log-on for the first time in the New Year, they might be greeted by emails that wish them a happy new year and offer a post card greeting. It seems that a new worm is masquerading in such fashion, according to experts at Verisign. Once a user clicks through to the 'postcard' link, a file deploys different variants of malicious code onto the PC and then uses the computer to send similar mass mailings. Some big company networks are already feeling the pain, so make sure that your IT organization is ready to take on the first worm of 2007.

Women's Vocabulary

1) FINE: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

2)
Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five Minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.

3)
Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.

4)
Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!

5)
Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to #3 for the meaning of nothing.)

6)
That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.

7)
Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or Faint. Just say you're welcome.

8)
Whatever: Is a women's way of saying F@!K YOU!

9)
Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking, "what's wrong", for the woman's response refer to # 3.

Please feel free to let me know your experiences or if you would like to add to the vocab!

Is 'Gizmo Project' Nokia's answer?

Nokia has been listening to its customers and the word on the street - and is now pushing the frontiers of Internet phone calling with The Gizmo Project...

Nokia Corporation, announced last week of a download that will install Gizmo VoIP—a plug-in adaptation of SIPphone Inc.'s Gizmo Project softphone—on its N80 Internet Edition smartphone. The Wi-Fi-enabled N80ie is optimized for VoIP using standards-based SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) signaling. The Gizmo VoIP plug-in is the first IP telephony module to be integrated into the Nokia platform.

"Our collaboration with SIPphone makes Internet calling easy, plus our open VoIP platform allows for any SIP-based VoIP provider to incorporate their services in our device architecture, giving consumers the best of the Internet world," said, Nokia Vice President, Multimedia, Ralph Eric Kunz.

"Collaborating with Nokia has allowed our development teams to create a compelling VoIP experience on the N80 Internet Edition and instantly enable millions of mobile consumers around the world to save money," said Michael Robertson, Chairman and CEO of SIPphone.

For users of PC-based Gizmo clients, the Nokia N80 integration provides a mobile option that cuts them loose from the PC and lets them talk to their Gizmo contacts for free—anywhere there's a Wi-Fi connection. But the problem is that this $500 smartphone is not sold in the US (yet!).

I know that all Nokia phones come bundled with their own VoIP application. There may be different incarnations of these apps, but this move tells me that their built-in VoIP apps are not as good as they'd like it to be.

The mobile VoIP space is an interesting one to watch right now.

Nor a pagan disciple of false rites
Not the pure amongst the impure
Neither Moses, nor the Pharoh

Not in the holy Vedas, am I
Nor in opium, neither in wine
Not in the drunkard`s intoxicated craze
Niether awake, nor in a sleeping daze

Bulleh! to me, I am not known

In happiness nor in sorrow, am I
Neither clean, nor a filthy mire
Not from water, nor from earth
Neither fire, nor from air, is my birth

Bulleh! to me, I am not known

Bulleh! to me, I am not known

Secrets of religion, I have not known
From Adam and Eve, I am not born
I am not the name I assume
Not in stillness, nor on the move

Bulleh! to me, I am not known

I am the first, I am the last
None other, have I ever known
I am the wisest of them all
Bulleh! do I stand alone?

Bulleh! to me, I am not known

Sufis, traditionally, spent their lives searching for the meaning of life, and for God, Himself. Those amongst them, who were poets, expressed this search, beautifully, through their poetry. Who is the Creator? What is the truth? What is the meaning of life? How can one find God? Who am I? These are some of the questions Sufis have tried to answer, by disassociating themselves from worldly knowledge and deeds, and moving onto a spiritual sphere, where they are no longer bound by traditionally interpreted religious or material restrictions.

Analyze This...

The following is from a movie I recently watched "Lage Raho Munnabhai"... If you understand Hindi, It'll make you think (I will translate later)

Shaher ki is daud mein daud ke karna kya hai
Jab yehi jeena hai doston to phir marna kya hai

Pehli baarish mein train late hone ki fikr hai
Bhul gaye bheegte hue tehelna kya hai
Serials ke kirdaaron ka saara haal hai malum
par maa ka haal puchne ki fursat kise hai

Ab ret pe nange paw tehelte kyun nahi
Ek sau aath hain channel phir dil behelte kyun nahi
Internet ki duniya ke to touch me hain,
lekin pados mein kaun rehta hai jaante tak nahi.
Mobile, Landline sab ki bharmaar hai,
Lekin jigri dost tak pahunche aise taar kahan hai

Kab doobte hue suraj ko dekha tha yaad hai
Kab jaana tha shaam ka woh bahana kya hai

To doston shaher ki is daud mein daud ke karna kya hai
Jab yehi jeena hai to fir Marna kya hai?

Cowboys - Going to the playoffs, but...

Dallas Cowboys are going to the playoffs for the first time in 3 years, but not with the momentum Championship teams have in December. They have been up and down after a shaky start. But after Tony Romo took over, I was very excited. I like this kid from IL. I think we can build a very good team around him. But the way they lost to Saints and Eagles just breaks my heart...

But I am a die-hard Cowboys fans so I will be watching them on Sunday... They play their last season game on Sunday against Lions. I know they will win it, but I really want is for them to clinch the division (that can happen with an Eagles loss). But I think Garcia and the whole Eagles team is playing with a lot of spirit...

Oh well, division leaders or not, who gives a crap? Cowboys are going to the playoffs and I am so excited. I think they'll end up playing Seattle... Can't wait! Get your popcorns ready!

(PS: Oh by the way, TO, stop dissing, start playing... and this is a team sport - you can will the Super Bowl by yourself - So can you please play with & for the team - once in your life?)

Forgotten Moments Remembered

One of my New Year resolutions is to START GETTING ORGANIZED.... I started doing that with my laptop... and I came across some old pictures, some great memories... forgotten moments... remembered!

In 2004, I was fortunate enough to be in Thandi Nadi, as we like to call it in Hindi (Actually Cool River Cafe in Irving, TX) on the same day Sergio Garcia won the 2004 Byron Nelson Championship.

The next picture is of my band - TATVA - THE ELEMENTS - creating their first song - JalJeera. We started this band sometime around August 2005... in Hidden Ridge, Irving, TX. There were 5 initial member (RR, KD, AV, CC, HY, SG) - Since then we have lost 3 but added others.... we have been able to create some really good music (5 songs so far). I will post some music here shortly....

Roy Williams: Safety, Dallas Cowboys

I felt like writing about the player I always liked, but now, I have started to admire: ROY WILLIAMS, Safety, Dallas Cowboys (#31):

"Safety" (On-the-Field) -- Oh Hell No!
On the field the opposing players are never safe when Roy is there.... Nicknamed "Superman" & "Hammer", he is known throughout the NFL as a very intimidating presence in the Cowboys defensive secondary and can be a game changer with his bone-jarring hits. Williams injured multiple opponents with his "horse-collar" tackle before it was banned by the NFL. Due to this rule, critics of Williams are quick to point out that he is a dirty player. He may be a dirty player on the field, but off the filed, there is nothing dirty about this person.

"Safety" (Off-the-Field) -- Oh Thank God!
He is truly one jem of a person. Kids, single moms, and other people in need always feel safe when Roy is around, because they know he can be trusted to lend a helping hand. I was so touched to see his efforts off-the-field. There are so many NFL players that make millions of dollars but how many of them have the heart of giving something back to the community? Only handful...

After signing his first pro contract, Williams made a $100,000 contribution towards a new strength training facility at the University of Oklahoma, as a part of the school's new indoor workout complex. The new area, which carries Williams' name, complements the main Robin Siegfried Complex at the Switzer Center. As a member of the Cowboys 2002 Rookie Club - a program designed to introduce rookie team member to community service in the Dallas area - Williams participated in monthly charity visits to non-profit organizations serving children. He also participated as a guest speaker at the club's annual United Way Hometown Huddle event for 100 children involved with The Salvation Army. During the 2003 off-season, Williams served as a celebrity escort at the annual Children's Cancer Fund Fashion Show and Luncheon co-chaired by Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach.

In July of 2004, the Roy Williams Safety Net Foundation was formed with the goal of “enhancing the quality of life of low-income single mother households in the Dallas area.” According to statistics, Dallas has the largest percentage of single mother households in the state of Texas, ranking at 29%. Roy has eagerly pulled the weight of families in this difficult situation onto his shoulders.

Roy embraces his responsibility as a role model very naturally. Undoubtedly, his career will continue to prove top notch as he transforms from NFL rising star to Super Star.

Roy also loves to play the guitar, saxophone, and piano.

The real Opportunity - build community around your audience

"The real opportunity for media, in this day and age, is ostensibly the interactive platform, not just online, but mobile and gaming. Basically, promise a way for content companies to get closer than ever to their audience, to build community around their audience, to learn from their audience so they can put out better professional content."

According to Quincy Smith, the new CBS Digital President, in a Reuters interview.

Quincy also appeals to entrepreneurs:
"I want to make sure that this is an appeal to every entrepreneur of every company size... We want to see them all. We want to see everyone in there. And we want to learn.”

Kids With High IQs Grow Up to Be Vegetarians

As a child's IQ rises, his taste for meat in adulthood declines, a new study suggests.

British researchers have found that children's IQ predicts their likelihood of becoming vegetarians as young adults -- lowering their risk for cardiovascular disease in the process. The finding could explain the link between smarts and better health, the investigators say.

"Brighter people tend to have healthier dietary habits," concluded lead author Catharine Gale, a senior research fellow at the MRC Epidemiology Resource Centre of the University of Southampton and Southampton General Hospital.

Recent studies suggest that vegetarianism may be associated with lower cholesterol, reduced risk of obesity and heart disease. This might explain why children with high IQs tend to have a lower risk of heart disease in later life.

The report is published in the Dec. 15 online edition of the British Medical Journal.

Obama not Osama! Jeez…

I stumbled upon this post on a great blog - "Almost As Good As Chocolate" by Shripriya. It is so funny!

There is a recent buzz around how Illinois Senator Barack Obama and Osama are so phonetically close. Some believe that Obama's own name will prevent him from the presidency or vp. And if you think that an average American voter knows the difference between Obama and Osama, you are in for a big surprise...

Check out Shripriya's post:

Do you think the average American voter knows the difference between Obama and Osama?
HECK NO!...

MySpace is No.1 in Page Views

Fox with MySpace is No.1 in Page Views, Surpassing Yahoo - ComScore

Personal Locator Services to Reach 20M Consumers by 2011

Personal locator services based on the GPS-enabled mobile phone will grow from their current low user-base of 500,000 in North America to a total of more than 20 million subscribers in 2011, according to a new study from ABI Research.

Such location-based services, recently launched as "family-finder" options by Sprint Nextel, Verizon Wireless, and Disney Mobile, have now been joined by a new offering from youth-oriented mobile operator Helio. Badged as the "Buddy Beacon," the service allows users of Helio's Samsung Drift handsets to build a "buddy list" and broadcast their locations to each other for display on GPS-linked maps.

"Helio's Buddy Beacon is going to be very popular," says ABI Research senior analyst Ken Hyers. "It's innovative. This is the first service of its kind in North America.

"First launched in South Korea and Japan, personal locator services could reach 34 million Asia-Pacific subscribers by 2011.

ABI Research's "Location-Based Services" report examines the market opportunities for LBS from a handset-based perspective, focusing on location technologies, operator deployment strategies, and GPS-enabled handset evolution.

Video Game Industry is doing good

Video game industry retail sales jumped 34% in November to $1.7 billion from $1.3 billion last November, according to data from the NPD Group. Total hardware sales soared 69% to $771 million on the launch of long-anticipated Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii.
  • The portable Nintendo DS sold in the highest numbers, with 918,000 units.
  • Sony's PlayStation 2 followed with 664,000 consoles sold.
  • Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold 511,000 units.
  • The $250 Nintendo Wii sold 476,000 units.
  • The PS3, which retails for $500 and $600, sold 197,000 units

Worldwide, Both Sony and Nintendo expect to sell 6 million of their next-generation consoles by the end of March.

Here comes IPTV...

Seems like everybody's getting into IPTV, from Microsoft to AOL, Alcatel-Lucent to Deutsche Telekom to China Netcom. But do consumers really want it?

Well, to know the answer, just look at the numbers from Gartner:

  • By 2010 the number of households with IPTV is forecast to reach 50 million from 3 million in 2005
  • revenues could rise even more sharply, to $13.4 billion from $399 million

IPTV Around the World

Servicec providers all over the world are are trying to figure out how to build a "Telco 2.0" that delivers TV, Phone and Internet services over broadband pipes.

On Dec. 4, Britain's BT Group launched its IPTV service, setting a target of signing up between 2 million and 3 million subscribers. AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Telefónica, Swisscom , France Telecom, Korea's KT, and China Netcom are also in various stages of rolling out their own services.

It's not just the telcos that have a stake in this. Just about every major tech company wants a piece of the action. Alcatel-Lucent is joined by Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, and Cisco Systems as well as upstarts such as UTStarcom and China's Huawei. The rivalry is expected to help the market ramp up quickly.

IPTV relies on the same basic technology as streaming video over the Web except that the signals stay within the telco's network. If done right, IPTV shouldn't be all that different from the programs you're accustomed to viewing on cable or over the airwaves. Where IPTV has an advantage over standard broadcasts is its potentially limitless number of channels and instant, on-demand access to a vast library of content stored on a telco's servers.

Internet Video Revenues - $7 billion by 2010

Annual U.S. revenues from Internet video services – spanning user-generated content to television shows and movies – will exceed $7 billion by 2010, according to Parks Associates.

“Major broadcasters, movie studios, retailers, and content aggregators are all experimenting with new ways to distribute video content online and attach advertising to their offerings,” said Kurt Scherf, vice president and principal analyst, Parks Associates. “The early results have been quite promising.”

According to the report Internet Video: Direct-to-Consumer Services, online distribution has boosted viewership and advertising revenues for current primetime television offerings and serves a strong differentiator in an increasingly fragmented market.

Read the Press Release

From the Analyst Blog:

Question: What's the revenue forecast for Internet video advertising?
Answer: Annual revenues for Internet video advertising in the U.S. market will grow threefold between 2006 and 2010 to approximately $4.4 billion in 2010. Most of these early advertising dollars will be generated from non-embedded display ads on different video streaming Websites. Later, as the inventory of high-quality embedded advertising increases, we’ll see that ad revenue grow to surpass the non-embedded ad dollars.

VC dollars pouring again....

1. Pinger, a San Jose, California based voice messaging start-up, has received cash infusion of $8 million dollars from Kleiner Perkins, Caufield & Byers and DAG Ventures.
Pinger launched at DEMO earlier this year, and is essentially the next generation voice messaging service. Instead of leaving someone a voice mail, you ping them, and that results in a text message being sent to them, which can be clicked to listen to that voice mail.

2. Vinod Khosla has invested $6.2 million in iSkoot, the Cambridge, MA-based Skype-to-mobile extender service.

3. Wikia took a second round of funding provided entirely by Amazon (amount undisclosed). Surviving Holiday Spam

Worldwide spam volumes increased from 31 billion messages a day in October of 2005, to 61 billion messages per day in October 2006 — an increase of nearly 100%. IronPort predicts that, this December, the number of spam messages will average 78 billion a day — up from 38 billion last year. :-(

A new technique known as image spam, reached a new high of 25% of total spam volume in October of 2006, compared to 4.8% in October 2005 — an increase of 421%. :-( :-( :-(

IronPort offers ten "do's and don'ts" to avoid the dangers associated with spam and other online dangers:

1) Don't Open
Whenever possible, do not open spam messages. Frequently spam messages include software that enables the spammer to determine how many, or which, email addresses have received and opened the message. A suspicious email is almost always spam.

2) Don't Respond
The best way to deal with email messages from unknown or suspicious addresses is to delete them, or allow your spam filter to quarantine them. If you respond to a spam message, even asking to be removed from their list, you will have confirmed to the sender that they have indeed reached a valid email address and your inbox may become the target of even more spam. If you are unsure whether a request for personal information from a company is legitimate, contact the company directly or type the website URL directly into your browser.

3) Don't Click
If you click on a link (even an "unsubscribe" link) offered in a spam message, you may infect your computer with spyware or a virus. Instead, delete the email immediately. If a message that appears to be from your bank, credit card company, eBay, Paypal, or others requests that you to click through to validate account details—don't. They already have your account details, so validation or confirmation should not be necessary. Simply delete the message. If you have questions about an email from a familiar organization, contact them by phone.

4) Don't Buy
Spam exists because it's profitable. It costs almost nothing for a spammer to send a million messages. If even one in that million people buy something, they're making money. Take the profit out of spam. Never purchase anything from spammers. Tell your friends and family to do the same—no matter how good the offer looks.

5) Don't Use Your Primary Email
AddressUsing your primary email address anywhere on the Web puts it at greater risk of being picked up by spammers. Use a secondary or temporary account for online transactions.

6) Don't Believe Everything You Read
Forwarded warning emails and chain letters are more prevalent during the holiday season. Spammers will harvest good email addresses from these forwarded messages. After a few generations, many of these letters contain hundreds of good email addresses. Consequently, people who were worried about the "missing girl" or the "desperate refugee" find themselves not only passing on a hoax, but also the recipients of more spam.

7) Do Use a Temporary or One-Time Use Credit Card
When in doubt; use a temporary or a one-time use credit card. Most major banks can provide these types of cards to help avoid abuse.

8) Do Check Security Policies
Use caution when posting in newsgroups, filling out unsecured forms on the Web, or posting your email address on websites. Verify the security policy of the website to ensure that your email address will not be shared with other companies.

9) Do Make Sure Your ISP or Company Has Spam, Virus and Spyware Protection
Spam emails are very often connected with viruses, so it's critical to have both anti-spam and anti-virus protection. Spam messages often include links to websites with spyware or malware. Check with your ISP or IT department to make sure you have adequate security against these kinds of threats. Having spam, virus and Web-based malware protection at the gateway can make a significant difference.

10) Do Use Your Common Sense
If it looks like spam, it probably is. Delete it.

Happy "Spam-Free" Holidays :-)

Google-YouTube: Deal Done for $1.78 billion

On November 14, 06, Google announced that they have completed the acquisition of YouTube. Based on the closing price of $481.03 per share, the deal is already worth $1.775 billion to YouTube’s shareholders.

But the combination of a YouTube copyright crackdown and increased competition could mean that YouTube may find it difficult to stay on top indefinitely, writes via CNN Money. Online video competitors are taking different approaches:

  • Metacafe (Oct. traffic 3.8 million users) is trying to differentiate itself from YouTube by offering creators of user-generated content the ability to get paid based on how many page views their videos generate.
  • Revver (Oct. traffic 262,000 visitors) inserts one-frame advertisements at the end of videos and shares the ad revenue with the creators.
  • VideoEgg is trying to be more of a partner with larger firms as opposed to a destination site for user videos. In addition to tools, VideoEgg has also developed an online video ad platform that's used by social networking sites such as Bebo, Dogster and Tagged.

damaka brings hispanic community closer together with Peer-to-Peer Voice and Video Communication

Affordable, private, end-to-end-encrypted, and scalable voice, video, and instant messaging solution launched for Spanish-speaking community

RICHARDSON, Texas – “Hola” is no longer just a word sent over a traditional telephone line. With damaka, “Hola” can accompany a smile transmitted over a private video channel, a red heart icon sent over instant messaging, and a sensuous voice traveling through the internet cloud. damaka has been working with Fonet Global which has a strong presence in Mexico to launch d00d, the world’s first SIP based secure, encrypted, peer-to-peer voice, video and data communication solution wrapped into a small software targeted for the Hispanic community (http://www.myd00d.com).

“The Spanish community is family-oriented,” said Hector Terrazas, CEO of Fonet Global, “Face-to-face meetings are important. damaka’s technology brings that togetherness to the desktop. The video feature will be an attraction, giving the community the chance to communicate and see their loved ones real time using the most secure technology out there.”

Fonet plans to take the scalable, damaka-powered solution to different revenue generating avenues including enterprise communication, family conferences, online learning, online dating, and 1-900 premium service.

According to Siva Ravikumar, Founder and CEO of damaka, “Because damaka’s SIP-based pure software technology has low infrastructure requirement, the start-up cost and time to market for a telecom operator is minimal. For a competitively priced licensing fee, a telecom operator can launch its own private-labeled unified communication and collaboration solution in less than 30 days.”

Hector further noted that Fonet Global was able to adapt to the new technology much faster because of the flexible nature of their operation. “We can cut through the bureaucracy and launch this product while the market is hot,” he said. “We want to move fast so that we can leapfrog our competition in providing the most secure and high quality communication and collaborative application to our customers.”

damaka recently developed and released the best-in-class peer-to-peer multi-party video (H.263/H.264) as the cornerstone of its video offering.

User-Generated Content Video revenues to exceed $850 million by 2010

User-Generated Content (UGC), such as that found on YouTube and MySpace, will continue to grow significantly in popularity and generate increasing revenue over the next several years. By 2010, the volume of downloads/views on these sites will surpass 65 billion, and revenues tied to UGC video are expected to exceed $850 million by 2010, reports In-Stat. Revenues are those directly linked to videos in the form of banner/skyscrapers, embedded video, Google Adsense, and/or branded pages/channels.

Other Highlights:
  • The size of downloads/views are estimated to eclipse 1.1 exabytes of data by 2010, with uploads growing to more than 9.1 petabytes.
  • 23% of the dozens of UCG sites studied currently support mobile access, with others making announcements for this support in the near future.
YouTube holds the highest market share for video, but MySpace has the most visitors.

The worldwide market for online content services is expected to expand by a factor of 10, growing from about 13 million households during 2005 to more than 131 million households by 2010.

These features, combined with the PC-to-Phone launch, makes damaka the most comprehensive, peer-to-peer, standards-based communication and collaboration software in the world. damaka also plans to launch DialIn™ feature shortly.

According to Chelsey Antony of Plano, Texas, “It took us about 30 seconds to download damaka from the Internet. After that, I could call my Grandma’s mobile phone in India and she sounded as if she was right next door. I could hear her excitement when I told her I got an A in math.”

According to Chandan Chopra, Director of IT at damaka. “Adding PC-to-Phone capabilities to our SIP-based, Peer-to-Peer platform adds a significant dimension to our existing suite of product offerings and underscores our commitment to increase user experience and deliver the next generation collaboration & communication software. “

damaka also offers an upgraded version of its software to corporations needing a one-stop-shop for unified communication and collaboration. A company can save the hassle of using one vendor for phone calls, another for video conferencing, and an unsecured third-party for IM. In less than 30 days, damaka can build, customize, and launch a private peer-to-peer network for companies ranging from a small start-up to a global conglomerate.

damaka Launches World's First Standards Based Desktop Multi-Party Peer-to-Peer Video Conferencing

Desktop Video Conferencing for up to Four People at Once Brings Jetson-Like Environment to Home and Office

RICHARDSON, Texas --(PR: Business Wire)-- Before you call your loved ones, check out damaka's peer-to-peer video conferencing. Whether you are a businessman traveling in Japan or a mother wanting to talk to her son in Mexico, a simple download of damaka, paired with a webcam, will allow you to see your family and friends from the comfort of your desktop. With its breakthrough Personal Softswitch(TM), damaka launches affordable, multi-party video conferencing in pure software format, bringing Jetson-like voice and video communication to the office and home.

According to Siva Ravikumar, CEO, "What makes damaka unique is that it uses SIP-based P2P technology with no server in the middle. This means that data packets are transmitted directly from one user to another. Today's video conferencing technology uses the client/server platform, which requires expensive servers or the use of a third party provider. damaka is the only direct P2P video conferencing solution available in the world today which allows for affordable, scalable, end-to-end-encrypted video conferencing for up to four people."

damaka's vision is to use best-in-class video (H.263/H.264), combined with P2P telephony, instant messaging, email, SMS, and gaming, to create a one-stop-shop for all communication and collaboration needs. The unified communication solution gives higher flexibility not only for a CEO to have a private conversation from his/her office to counterparts worldwide, but also for families in different parts of the world to have affordable face-to-face chats from the comfort of their homes.

damaka licenses its software to operators who are interested in new revenue streams with minimal infrastructure investment and to enterprises interested in a secure collaboration platform. damaka also plans to work with online communities and dating sites interested in a low-cost, scalable, feature-rich platform to empower its members to communicate directly and privately with one another.
